Renovation of a 1950s home in Pretoria

Viewed from across the valley, Gert and Leonie Steyn’s home in Pretoria floats high on a rocky ridge. Raising houses on stilts was a favourite architectural trick of mid-century modern architecture. The pond is a later addition that the owners decided to keep. The slate paving, an authentic detail, was preserved and extended in line with the pillars to blur the boundaries between inside and outside.
